What are Class Heat Maps?

We are excited to reveal the new and improved design of the Class Heat Maps!

Heat Maps are detailed activity reports that allow teachers to monitor student interaction with course content such as missions, quizzes, and videos. Heat Maps provide information on a per student or per class level, with options to drill deeper to see student quiz question results, mission code, and time spent on each activity. Optional game ‘scores’ are provided to support a gamification model.

Heat Maps allow teachers to:

  • Identify activities that the class is struggling with
  • Identify individual students who may need additional support
  • Monitor the rate at which students are moving through the content

The Students panel appears on the left. Teachers can scroll up and down and order student names alphabetically by last name.

The Packs and Activities panel is displayed at the top of the Heat Map:

The first pack will appear open by default. You can open and close each pack to view its activity tiles by clicking the + / - buttons in the Packs panel.

In this example, Pack 1: Adventure Peak is open to show activities and students’ individual progress per activity, while Packs 2-12 are closed:

Within an expanded pack, missions are numbered, while other activities such as videos and quizzes are not:

Teachers can refresh the data in Heat Maps by clicking the ‘Refresh’ button.

The ‘Go to Course’ button next to the course name will take you directly to the course in the Learning Center.

Legend

The legend at the top-right provides a breakdown of the course content shown:

tile-green.png Green tile - activity completed successfully*

tile-yellow.png Yellow tile - activity still in progress

tile-grey.png Grey tile - activity not started

tile-pending.png Pink dot on tile - activity pending teacher assessment

lock_icon.png Lock icon on tile - content locked for this student (see Progress Type)

*Successful mission completion varies. Most missions require students to reach the target by writing code, instead of using Manual Control. Others may require that students collect a particular number of items before reaching the target.

Videos are considered ‘complete’ as soon as they are opened, and quizzes are considered ‘complete’ when all questions have been answered correctly.

Individual Student Data

Hovering over an activity tile will highlight the corresponding student and activity.

Clicking on the activity tile will display a pop-up window with more detailed information, such as the last time a student was active on the learning platform:

These activity pop-up windows also include information about the time and number of attempts the student spent on the activity, as well as the student’s score:

Note the View Code button - For missions, clicking this button will open a panel where you can review the student’s solution to this mission. This works whether the solution is finished or in progress.
